Michael Aaron Selin was born December 7th, 1966, in Gainesville, Florida. He is married and has a daughter and a son. He has trained in many different martial arts for varying periods of time, but finally found his true path when he met Jaff Raji near the end of December in 2000.

Michael began training Judo in Taiwan under Tsai Sensei in 1989. He continued in this training and received Shodan with the USJI in Paramus, New Jersey, under Harry Glackin Sensei in 1997. During this same period, Michael began training Aikido in 1991 under Lee Ching Nan Sensei in Taiwan, and received Shodan with the Taiwan Aikido Federation and the Aikikai in Japan in 1994.

Although he enjoyed his training in Aikido and Judo, Michael did not find complete satisfaction in these experiences and began to seek a different course of study. He trained briefly in Kyukashinkai Karate, Shao Lin Gung Fu, Shotokan Karate, Yang Style Tai Chi, Lohan Boxing, Tae Kwon Do, and finally in Muay Thai with trainer and coach Kevin James McHugh (www.kyushuyoga.com). These explorations, however, still did not satisfy his needs. After a seemingly endless search and being exposed to a broad picture of martial arts, Michael decided to quit martial arts altogether and simply join a local health club. He was not sure what he was searching for, but he knew in his heart that he had not yet found it.

It was at this point, near the end of the year 2000, that Kevin McHugh introduced Michael to Jaff Raji in Hong Kong. After speaking and training with Jaff for only a brief time in a hotel room at the YMCA Michael realized that he had at last found what he was looking for. Raji Sensei showed Michael what the practice of true budo and self-work could be. Here was the teacher and the intensity of training he had been searching for all these years without even realizing it. Truly when the student is ready the master will appear! Michael stopped training everything else and flew to France to formally ask Jaff to be his Sensei. Immediately thereafter, he began studying Aikido, Jodo and Iaido in earnest and has not regretted a single moment of his decision.

Since that time, Michael has been fortunate to host seminars with Jaff every year: first at a small dojo in Taiwan, then in Portland when the dojo was in his garage, then at borrowed clubs and gymnasiums around town, and finally in August of 2005 at the Ecole de Budo RAJI - USA here in St. Johns. Over the years, attendance has continued to grow at what is now the annual Portland Summer Seminar.

This event attracts many students from around the Portland community as well as a large contingent from other Ecole de Budo RAJI dojos worldwide. Michael has also had the tremendous fortune of traveling extensively each year to Europe and South America to train under Jaff at some of his many seminars. These activities have helped develop a strong connection between our Portland dojo and the international brotherhood that is Ecole de Budo RAJI - International. Michael was awarded the title of Advanced Instructor by Raji Sensei in August 2005.

"I invite anyone who feels the urge for self-discovery and intense training to join us for what has been without a doubt one of the greatest journeys of my life." - Michael Selin
